MEET THE ARTIST
MATTHEW CLARKSON
Alcohol ink artist
I’m a contemporary artist working with alcohol ink to create abstract landscape paintings that explore atmosphere, memory, and emotional geography. I was raised in eastern Washington in an area marked by wheat fields, sage brush, and basalt rock formations. I’m inspired by wide horizons.
Because of its properties, alcohol ink allows me to explore vibrant colors and fluid movement resulting in works that feel expansive yet intimate, evoking open land, shifting skies, and moments of quiet stillness. While the imagery suggests landscape, it remains intentionally nonliteral, inviting personal interpretation and prolonged engagement.
MATERIAL AND PROCESS
Working with alcohol ink allows for a balance between control and unpredictability.
The medium creates fluid movement, saturated color, and organic forms that echo natural systems—wind, water, and shifting light.
Themes of openness, movement, and stillness are central—creating pieces that feel both expansive and quiet at the same time.
